Tropical cyclone information resources

Tropical cyclones are low pressure systems that form over warm tropical waters and have gale force winds near the centre. They are dangerous because they produce destructive winds, heavy rainfall with flooding and damaging storm surges that can cause inundation of low-lying coastal areas. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has a range of information resources in regard to Australian tropical cyclones:

  • About Tropical Cyclones has information on what tropical cyclones are, cyclone danger and impacts, and cyclone severity categories.
  • Surviving Cyclones: Preparation and Safety Procedures provides a general checklist for cyclone preparation and safety procedures and links to references and guides.
  • Tropical Cyclone Outlooks consists of seasonal outlooks that are issued in October and may be updated during the season, and three-day outlooks that are issued during the cyclone season for most areas and throughout the year for the Central Indian Ocean area.
  • Current Tropical Cyclones has a location and track map and warning information for any current cyclones.
  • Previous Tropical Cyclones has details of all tropical cyclones that are known to have occurred, including tracks maps.
